About me

My name is Maggie. I have grown up on the beautiful West coast of British Columbia and the world of Early Childhood Education has been at the heart of my world for decades. With an ever present desire to care for children, I aspired to be a teacher. While completing my initial post secondary studies, I worked in the child care centre at the University of Victoria, and my heart was forever settled on working with the youngest members of our world. I completed my degree and pursued Early Childhood Education, opening my own child care centre nearly 20 years ago, after not finding philosophical alignment with the facilities I visited as part of my practica experience. I have taken great pride in fulfilling a need for high quality care in our community and while my time with the little ones is incredibly fulfilling, I felt inspired to expand my skillset and pursued a secondary role in the early childhood sector and have been an ECEC instructor for the past five years.

My passions are many, but always showing up the strongest in my studies and my practice is my love for risky play. As I explore in one of my artifacts, I credit this to the type of childhood I was privileged to have. Being an early childhood educator for nearly two decades, I have been witness to many shifts and evolutions and the one that leaves me the most unsettled is the stripping of autonomy and removal of all risk from children's lives; arguably, in the name of safety. As you will see in my metaphor, intentions, and artifacts, I believe that the influence educators and parents have on children's connection with nature and place significantly impacts their autonomy and the way they explore their environments and engage with risk taking.

I am firm believer that relationship is foundational to all of our work in early childhood education, and the first relationship we need to explore is the one we have with ourselves. In better understanding ourselves and our own relationship with place, we will see the ways in which we influence the children with whom we share space and time.

Who I am

"Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom" - Aristotle

Nurturer

Three incredible young men call me mom. They have allowed me to nurture a love of learning and inspired me to think critically, to advocate, to wonder, and to take risks. They have taught me about perseverance and treading your own path.

Lifelong Learner

A lifelong learner at heart, I never shy away from acquisition of knowledge and new adventures in learning. This Master of Education journey was a natural next step in my desire to challenge and expand the knowledge I hold.

Co-creator of Knowledge

As a university ECEC instructor and owner of a child care centre, I am grateful to be a co-creator of knowledge, expanding the breadth of Early Childhood Education, with infants to preschoolers through to educators of all ages.

Co-habitant

I acknowledge the Tla'amin nation on whose lands I live, work, learn, and play. I extend my gratitude to the nation and consciously honour land and place in all of my experiences. čɛčɛhaθɛč

My Academic Journey at UBC

A significant part of the journey, in both operating a child care centre and educating future ECEs has been understanding myself, the philosophical ideas I carry, and any bias I may hold. My journey with UBC has been foundational to helping me recognize the perpetuation of dominant discourse and the value and importance of challenging the why behind what I believe, what I do, and how I show up for the children and others in my life.
